Hesitant towards newcomers, River City in Iowa welcomes Harold Hill who moonlights as a traveling music dealer but Harold has something up his sleeves. He is actually a conman getting ready to swindle the town's people out of their hard-earned money. His deceitful scheme is to lure River City that he is a music professor selling musical instruments and uniforms. Creating a state of anxiety the mastermind persuades the people that the arrival of a new pool table will corrupt the City's teens and that they must create a boy's band instead. Of course to start a boy's band you need instruments and uniforms and this exactly what Harold is supposedly selling but has no intention of ever delivering on his promise. Almost every story must come with a an impediment and the cast deliver Marian Paroo in impressive style. She acquires the data to accuse Harold but somehow she has a change of mind when she witnesses Harold's appeal.
